3 Reasons Why You Should Buy a Previous Model

Here are reasons why I recommend buying these cheap baseball bats that still perform very well.

1 ) Youth Baseball Bats Are Way Overpriced

Each year new youth baseball bats get more and more expensive.

Back in 2017 the most expensive bat was $300 and in 2026 it has increased to $500!

Bats are extremely overpriced in 2026 and you save a lot of money by last year’s high end model that is just as good as the newest one.

2 ) Newer Bat Models are Not Much Better

There usually isn’t that much a difference between the latest models except for the new paint job.

You can get last year’s models for 50% off and they’re just as good as the latest models.

3 ) Your Kid Will Outgrow the New Bat in 6 Months

Your child will also outgrow the new bat in 6 – 12 months so there’s no need to spend on a new bat.

Your child will grow and it’s 100% chance your child will need a new bat that’s either longer or heavier next year.

Just refer to the baseball bat size chart and you’ll realize that a youth baseball bat will last only a few months.

Warranty May Be Limited or Not Apply

Every youth baseball bat has a warranty (from 90 days to 1 year) and the warranties only apply from the original receipt from an authorized dealer.

So if the seller purchased from Dick’s Sporting Goods (an authorized seller) on April 1, 2026 and you bought the bat from seller on Aug. 1, 2026, then you only have 8 months left on the 1 year warranty.

Never Had an Issue Buying Second-Hand

Even though the warranties are limited or expired I’ve personally never had an issue buying a brand new bat second hand.

All my bats have been great and I’ve saved tons of money.

Discounted High End Bats vs. New Mid-Tier Models

If you’re going to spend the same amount of money, I will recommend buying last year’s model of a high end bat rather than a newer mid tier model.

For example, if you’re going to spend $200, it’s better to buy last year’s high end model at a discount instead of buying a brand new model for $200.

Buying A Used Youth Baseball Bat

You can also save even more money if you buy a previous model that was used but you have to be careful.

Tips on Buying Used Bats

Here are important tips to follow when buying cheap baseball bats on the used market.

Buy Only Barely Used Bats

I would only purchase if a bat is barely used and looks relatively new because a lot of things can break if a bat has been used a lot.

Pay Close Attention to the Pictures

I would inspect and pay close attention to the pictures and especially images of the barrel.

Make sure there are no cracks or dents.

Precautions to Buying Used Composite

You need to look at the pictures carefully before you buy a used Composite because they crack and break after a certain number of swings.

Bats such as the Easton Hype is known to break after 1000 swings or less.

I have purchased used composites but I only got it because the pictures of the bat looked brand new.

Precautions to Used Hybrid Bats

I would also be careful of buying a used hybrid baseball bats.

Hybrids are two piece bats made of both metal and composite and they can crack.

Two piece bats may also sometimes rattle after too many hits.

Buying Used Metal Bats

Buying a used metal bat is generally safer because they don’t crack but you have to be careful that the end cap is not broken.

There also can be small dents on the barrel but I’ve purchased a bunch of these and haven’t had a problem.

Don’t Buy Used Wood Bats

I love wood bats and all 3 of my boys train with them but don’t buy a used one because wood may crack.

We buy tons of wood bats and only buy brand new.

Warranty Does Not Apply

The manufacturer warranty does not apply with used bats so there’s a major risk.

That said, I’ve had only 1 issue out of the 20+ used bats that I’ve purchased and in that situation the seller on eBay was nice enough to give me a full refund.

Two Great Places to Buy Used Bats

You can get a lot of high quality cheap baseball bats on Sideline Swap or eBay.

Make sure you buy from someone that has good past reviews.

Only Disadvantage

The only downside to buying a discounted premium bat is that your child may not be as “cool” because they don’t have the latest bat that other kids have.

That’s the only drawback since most new models are not that much better than previous models.

Invest Your Money in Training Instead

The coolest new bat won’t make your child a great hitter but better hitting skills will.

Use the money you save for private lessons instead.

Mistake I Made

I purchased a brand new $300 bat for my oldest son in 2017 thinking that it would last 1 – 2 years and it did not.

He needed a new one in 10 months!

The truth is that your child grows and they’ll need a new bat by next year!

Kids also get tired on their coolest new bat and they’ll want another one soon so it’s no point to waste so much money just for 6 months.
