Best Age to Start Travel Baseball
Best age to start travel baseball is at 9 years old (9U) where your child has already demonstrated interest and passion for the sport.
Despite what many influencers say, there are 3 big reasons why you don’t want to wait longer and you need to start early.
Why 9 Years Old is the Best Age to Start Travel Baseball
By 9 years old, your child probably has played anywhere from 1 – 3 years of recreational baseball, such as the Little League or Pony League.
By now, you should be able to tell whether your child has passion and real interest in the game.
If your child really loves to play baseball, then travel baseball would just make things even more fun.
Why Not Start Travel Ball Earlier?
Kids may not be mature nor old enough to appreciate the seriousness, intensity or time commitment that travel baseball requires and then they will lose interest in the sport forever because it no longer becomes fun for them.
We personally know a friend who joined a very competitive travel baseball team at 8 years old and they were practicing in 90 degree weather.
Needless to say, the kid lost interest in the game because baseball no longer became fun.
Travel baseball costs can range from anywhere $300 to $950 a month and it’s not worth spending that much to get your child to lose interest in the game.
Kids Not Developed Enough Before 9
It takes time for motor skills to develop.
When kids are younger, they have trouble throwing strikes.
What you end up seeing are games where kids just throw endless balls and the positional players just stand there and watch the pitcher walk batter after batter
The game becomes super boring.
I once saw a team that walked 6 batters in a row and every kid on the field was bored out of their mind!
This will be the easiest way for them to lose interest.
Let Them Explore Other Interests
Before 9 years old, it’s good for a child to explore different things that they may like but the time commitment required for travel baseball will prevent them from discovering other things.
Why You Need to Start Travel Ball Early
Despite what some influencers say, here are reasons why it’s good to get started early if your child has a passion for the game.
1 ) They Will Become Better High School Players
Back in the 90s, 2000s or even 2015, travel baseball was not necessary to be good in high school but times have changed!
This is 2026!
If your child wants to be a good high school player (and not just ride the bench) or play in college then they need to get started early.
The competition is much tougher now because of so many kids playing travel baseball.
If your child is not playing then it’s going to be difficult to compete against a kid who has been playing for years.
We are not saying it’s something we like but that is the truth and is what’s happening.
Kids that start travel baseball later usually barely make the high school team or they make it but never get playing time.
Kids who started later generally fall behind and it’s much harder to catch up because of the advanced training and competition that they have missed out on.
2 ) Baseball Is a Very Technical Sport
The reason why it’s hard to catch up is because unlike sports such as football or basketball, baseball is a very technical sport and involves so many different skills.
The technical skills play a much bigger impact than the athleticism meaning that you can be the biggest and strongest kid, but if you don’t have the skill to hit a ball, it doesn’t matter how strong you are.
You are still never going to be good.
I have personally seen so many kids who take just one year off to never be able to catch up to their peers.
3 ) Don’t Compare Yourself to MLB Players, Outliers and Exceptions
Of course you may hear influencers talk about how this MLB player never played travel baseball or started travel ball at a late age but you have to discount that because of 2 reasons:
1 ) Times Have Changed
If the MLB player was growing up today chances are they would be playing travel baseball early on.
If you want to look outside the USA, all the MLB players from Latin America and Asia started training hard at a young age such as 9 years old.
2 ) MLB Professionals Are Genetic Exceptions (Outliers)
You can’t use the MLB players as an example.
Most MLB stars have a genetic advantage and can pick things up later and still be very good.
But chances are you don’t have those genetics and neither does your child.
Don’t Get Started With Travel Ball If…
We don’t recommend getting your child involved with travel baseball if they don’t have a strong interest in the sport because the intensity and the competitiveness may turn them away from baseball forever.
